HGTV Star Mike Holmes Supports Mandatory Radon Testing

Mike Holmes, a Healthy Home Expert and HGTV celebrity, has recently spoken out in support of mandatory radon gas testing in Ontario, his home province.

There is currently no legislation in effect to ensure landlords or homeowners test for radon in Ontario, unlike the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the US which requires testing in multi-family homes. Holmes is looking to incorporate radon gas testing into Ontario's Residential Tenancy Act, which is in the process of being updated.

The suggested change would make testing for radon mandatory in basement rental units. Radon is a heavy gas, so it is more likely to accumulate in areas like the basement.

As the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking, radon gas is a danger that should be taken seriously. "I've been doing this for a really long time," says Holmes. "One thing I've learned is that sometimes it's the things you can't see that end up causing the most harm - things like radon."

Testing for radon is the only way to determine its presence in any home. If you're concerned about the health and safety of your own property, National Radon Defense can help. Our dealers offer testing and radon mitigation services if radon gas is found in your home, and we have dealers all throughout Canada. Contact your Ontario NRD contractor for more information!
