Indoor air quality is no longer a luxury topic. It is a priority.

Homeowners and realtors today are investing in smarter HVAC systems, air purifiers, and energy-efficient upgrades in old or new homes. But while many focus on comfort and efficiency, one of the most serious indoor health threats often goes unnoticed: Radon. This invisible gas continues to impact millions of homes, and the growing awareness around it is fueling one of the fastest-rising sectors in home services today: the radon mitigation industry. This is not just a trend. It is a long-term shift in how people think about their homes, their health, and their future.

What Is Radon and Why It Is a Serious Health Risk

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It moves through the ground and can enter homes through foundation cracks, sump pits, crawl spaces, and even tiny structural gaps. Here is the problem.

You cannot see it. You cannot smell it. You cannot feel it.

But long-term exposure can have serious consequences.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the leading cause among non-smokers. That alone has made radon testing and mitigation a critical step in responsible homeownership.

Why Radon Awareness Is Exploding Right Now

The surge in demand for radon mitigation services did not happen by accident. It is being driven by a new generation of homeowners who are more informed, more health-conscious, and less willing to take risks inside their homes.

Health Is Really Wealth

People are paying closer attention to what they breathe. Indoor air quality is now part of everyday conversations, right alongside fitness and nutrition.

Radon is no longer ignored. It is being treated as a serious environmental health risk.

Real Estate Has Changed For Radon

Homebuyers are asking smarter questions. Radon testing is becoming a standard part of inspections, and homes with mitigation systems often close faster and with fewer objections.

Sellers who address radon early are gaining a competitive edge.

Radon Education Is Everywhere

Organizations like the World Health Organization and campaigns such as National Radon Action Month have pushed radon into the spotlight.

The result is simple. More awareness means more action.

How Radon Mitigation Improves Quality of Life

A radon mitigation system is designed to reduce radon levels by venting the gas safely outside before it can accumulate indoors. In most cases, these systems can reduce levels by up to 99%. But the real value goes far beyond the numbers.

Health Protection That Lasts

Reducing radon exposure lowers long-term health risks. For families, that means fewer unknowns and more control over their living environment.

A Safer Home for Years to Come

Once installed, a mitigation system becomes a permanent safety feature. It protects not just current homeowners, but future occupants as well.

Stronger Property Value

Homes with radon mitigation systems are increasingly seen as safer and more desirable. In competitive markets, this can make a measurable difference.

Confidence in Your Indoor Air

When radon is addressed, homeowners can stop worrying about the biggest invisible threat in their home and focus on comfort, efficiency, and lifestyle.

The Radon Mitigation Industry Is Surging and Here Is Why

The demand for radon services is not slowing down. It is accelerating.

Millions of homes still have elevated radon levels, and awareness continues to grow. This creates a consistent and expanding need for professionals who can test, diagnose, and mitigate radon issues. For contractors and service providers, this is where things get interesting. The radon mitigation industry sits at the intersection of health, real estate, and home improvement. That combination makes it one of the most resilient and future-proof service categories available today.

Why Radon Mitigation Is a Smart Business Opportunity

This is not just about homeowners. It is about opportunity.

Contractors, home inspectors, HVAC specialists, and even general service providers are realizing that radon mitigation is one of the most strategic ways to grow their business.

Here is why:

High demand with low saturation in many markets

Recurring opportunities through testing and referrals

Strong alignment with existing home services

A mission-driven service that actually saves lives

Instead of competing in crowded service categories, professionals can step into a space where demand is rising and expertise is valued.

Why This Industry Is Built for the Long Term

Radon is not going anywhere.

It exists naturally in the ground, which means every home has potential exposure. As awareness continues to grow, testing will become as standard as checking a roof or HVAC system.

Builders are adapting. Real estate professionals are recommending testing. Homeowners are becoming proactive.

All signs point to one thing: the radon mitigation industry is here to stay.

The Bigger Picture: Healthier Homes, Smarter Businesses

Every homeowner wants peace of mind. Every business owner wants growth.

The radon mitigation industry delivers both.

For homeowners, it means safer air and better long-term health.

For professionals, it means stepping into a high-impact, high-demand industry that is still expanding.

That combination is rare.

Final Take: The Opportunity Most People Are Still Missing

Most homeowners still have not tested for radon. Many do not even know it exists in their home.

That gap between awareness and action is where the opportunity lives.

As more people learn about radon, the demand for mitigation will continue to rise. Those who position themselves early, whether as homeowners taking action or professionals entering the space, will be ahead of the curve.

The radon mitigation industry is not just growing.

It is becoming essential.

The Radon Wake-Up Call: Why Radon Testing and Mitigation Matter More Than Ever

Every January, National Radon Action Month sparks the same reminders about what radon is and why it matters. But reality is harder hitting. Radon is still the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and thousands of families remain unaware of what is happening under their own homes. The real challenge is not awareness. It is the action.

A lot of homeowners want answers. Contractors want opportunities. The radon industry is moving fast, and 2026 is shaping up to be the strongest year yet for professional radon testing, radon remediation, and residential radon mitigation. This guide breaks down what homeowners are searching for and what every radon contractor should be prepared to deliver.

The Rising Concern: Symptoms of Radon Exposure

Search engines like Google or Yahoo see millions of queries every year for terms like symptoms of radon, radon gas poisoning, and radon gas exposure symptoms. Here is the truth. Radon has no smell, no taste, and no warning signs. There are no early symptoms of radon exposure. Most people only discover a problem after a lung cancer diagnosis. This is why residential radon testing matters. It is the only way to know if your home has elevated levels of radon gas. Professional radon testing provides accurate readings, clear timelines, and reliable data for your home and your health.

Why More Homeowners Are Checking Radon Levels

Radon is gaining attention for two reasons. First, more states are tightening radon real estate requirements and laws. Second, homeowners want healthier indoor spaces now that more work and life happen at home. Professional radon testing is becoming routine. Families want to prevent lung cancer before it starts, not after. The demand for certified radon contractors and radon mitigation contractors has never been higher. To make the story short, test for radon while you can!

What Homeowners Ask Next: How Much Is a Radon Mitigation System

Cost searches are exploding online. You have seen these searches for sure:

radon mitigation system cost

radon mitigation cost

cost of radon mitigation system

how much is a radon mitigation system

radon removal system

radon mitigation for real estate or homes for sale

radon mitigation companies near me

Homeowners want upfront clarity. The average radon mitigation system cost varies depending on the foundation, the home size, and the level of radon found during testing. Most projects fall in the $1500 up to $4000 dollar-range (current year, depending on area structure), and the investment pays back in both health protection and property value. The key is education. When homeowners understand how radon mitigation works, they are more willing to move forward.

How Radon Mitigation Works in Plain Language

A radon mitigation contractor installs a system that pulls radon gas from under the home and releases it safely outside. The process is called radon reduction, radon abatement, or radon removal in homes. The most common method is sub-slab depressurization. A pipe and fan system creates a vacuum beneath the foundation and removes the radon before it enters the living space. This method is reliable, fast, and improves indoor air quality within hours. Professional radon abatement solves a silent problem that would otherwise remain undetected.

Business Side: Why Radon Business Is a Strong Profitable Market

Contractors all over the country are expanding into radon remediation because the demand keeps rising. Homeowners want certified experts. Realtors need compliance. States continue adding new rules. Residential radon mitigation is becoming a standard home safety upgrade, not an optional one. A radon contractor who offers both testing and mitigation becomes a trusted partner in the community. It is a recession resistant service with strong recurring demand.

Radon Trends That Will Shape 2025

Here is where the industry is heading.

More Home Sales Will Require Radon Testing - Real estate radon requirements continue to expand, which increases demand for professional radon testing.

Growth in Radon Mitigation Certification - More contractors are pursuing certification as radon mitigation contractors to meet the volume of requests.

Rising Awareness of Radon Gas Symptoms - People are searching for symptoms of radon exposure more than ever. This drives them directly to radon testing solutions.

Indoor Air Quality Bundling - Radon remediation is becoming part of a larger healthy home package that includes ventilation, air filtration, and overall indoor environmental safety.

Why Taking Action on Radon Now Matters

Radon is not seasonal. Levels stay high year-round, and winter months often make radon levels spike due to closed doors and reduced ventilation. Homeowners who postpone testing often discover dangerous levels later. For contractors, waiting means losing territory to competitors who are already educating homeowners. Radon reduction is not just a service. It is a responsibility. When homes are safer, communities thrive.

Radon is real. Radon is preventable. And this 2026 is the year more families and contractors take action. Professional radon testing identifies the problem. Radon abatement fixes it for good. With certified radon contractors leading the charge, radon removal in homes becomes a standard part of healthy living. Take January being National Radon Action Month as your sign to do so. Always remember that your local National Radon Defense Dealer or Contractor is ready to help!
5 Warning Signs of Lung Cancer Nonsmokers Should Never Ignore And Why Radon Could Be the Real Threat Inside Your Home

Lung cancer is not just a smoker’s disease. More and more people who have never touched a cigarette are being diagnosed, and one invisible culprit keeps showing up in the story: radon gas. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the number one cause among nonsmokers.

Radon cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. It builds up silently in homes, workplaces, and schools. National Radon Defense was created for one mission: protect families before symptoms appear and lung cancer becomes the wake-up call no one wants. The realistic question is, are you sure you're healthy?

If you want to safeguard your health and your home, these are the signs you must pay attention to.

1. A Cough That Refuses to Go Away

If your cough lasts longer than usual or gets worse over time, your body may be signaling that something deeper is happening. Many people blame a chronic cough on allergies, weather changes, or age. In reality, it can be one of the first early warning signs of radon-related lung damage.

This is the symptom most people ignore. Do not be one of them.

2. Shortness of Breath That Shows Up Out of Nowhere

Walking up the stairs suddenly feels harder. Simple activities leave you winded. Breathing feels heavier than it used to. These are major red flags.

When radon enters the lungs, it damages cells slowly. Shortness of breath is often the moment people finally notice something is off.

3. Chest Pain, Tightness, or a Hoarse Voice

A lingering ache in your chest, a tight feeling when breathing in, or a voice that sounds hoarse for no obvious reason can all point to early lung cancer.

These issues show up quietly at first. They rarely cause panic, but they should absolutely spark action.

4. Coughing Up Blood or Bloody Mucus

Even small streaks of blood are not normal. This is one of the clearest signs that lung tissue may be damaged or irritated.

If this happens, seek medical care right away and test your home for radon as soon as possible.

5. Rapid Weight Loss, Reduced Appetite, or Constant Fatigue

When your body is fighting something serious, it uses energy differently. You may notice losing weight without trying or feeling exhausted all day, even when you sleep well. Some people also experience frequent respiratory infections.

If you are dealing with any of these and you have never tested for radon, your home needs immediate attention.

Why Symptoms Often Go Unnoticed

Here is the truth most people never hear:

Radon has zero smell or taste.

It takes years of exposure before symptoms appear.

Most early warning signs look like everyday health problems.

This combination is exactly why lung cancer catches so many nonsmokers off guard.

What Every Homeowner Should Do About Radon Today

If you want to protect your health, your family, and your home, start here:

1. Test your home for radon.

The only way to know your radon level is by testing. Guessing does not work.

2. Work only with certified and licensed radon professionals.

DIY videos or kits miss key problems which could cause more expense. Certified radon pros use verified testing methods and install systems that lower radon permanently.

3. If your levels are high, mitigate immediately.

A proper radon mitigation system can reduce radon and protect you for years.

4. Talk to your doctor if symptoms match what you just read.

Early screening saves lives and an accurate diagnosis would help!

The National Radon Defense Mission

National Radon Defense exists to prevent tragedies that never needed to happen. Every test. Every mitigation. Every homeowner we educate. It all leads back to one goal: saving lives.

Lung cancer from radon is preventable. The only mistake is waiting. If you want the safest air possible for your family, now is the moment to act. We're in for Clearing Air, Saving Lives!

Lung Cancer Awareness Month:
The Rising Demand for Radon Mitigation Across North America

Every November, National Lung Cancer Awareness Month reminds us of a serious but often overlooked truth: radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. What most people don’t realize is that this invisible threat is also creating one of the fastest-growing business opportunities in the home improvement and environmental health industries.

An Invisible Threat and an Expanding Market

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas released from soil, rock, and water. It seeps into homes through cracks and gaps in the foundation, accumulating to levels that can become life-threatening over time. With no color, odor, or taste, radon can only be detected through professional radon testing. Every year, awareness grows and so does demand. In the world of business, we are highly aware of the supply and demand in each territory. We figured a lot, we mean A LOT of homes have not tested yet which creates caution along with opportunity.

As more homeowners, schools, and building managers understand the dangers of radon exposure, requests for radon detectors, radon removal systems, and certified mitigation services are increasing rapidly in every U.S. territory. In high-risk regions like the Midwest, where soil composition contributes to elevated radon levels, the demand for radon mitigation in Nebraska and radon mitigation in Iowa has surged. But it’s not just limited to these states. Radon is found in all 50 states, meaning the need for qualified radon contractors is nationwide.

Why Radon Testing and Mitigation Is Necessary

The symptoms of radon exposure are silent. Unlike smoke or carbon monoxide, radon poisoning develops slowly over time, leading to lung tissue damage and, ultimately, lung cancer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon causes over 21,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. The good news is that radon exposure is entirely preventable. With professional radon testing and mitigation, homeowners can reduce radon levels to safe limits. Residential radon testing or mitigation typically involves using a radon detector to measure concentration and, if needed, installing a radon reduction system that vents the gas safely outside.

How Radon Mitigation Works

Radon mitigation systems are highly effective, using fans and piping to draw radon gas from beneath the foundation and release it outdoors. A certified radon mitigation contractor ensures the system is installed properly, customized to the structure of each home. While homeowners often ask about the cost of radon mitigation systems, the investment usually is minimal compared to the peace of mind and protection it provides. Knowing how radon mitigation works and investing in the right business franchise is the first step toward long-term safety and home value.

A Growing Business Opportunity

The initial question, is a radon business franchise worth it? Is this worth the risk?

As public awareness of indoor air quality rises, so does the opportunity for business owners. The radon mitigation industry is expanding across the country, driven by increased testing requirements, real estate transactions, and state-level health initiatives.

Entrepreneurs entering this field find that the demand for radon abatement, radon remediation, and radon reduction services continues to grow year after year. It’s a business that not only provides financial growth but also makes a real difference by protecting families and communities.

Partnering with National Radon Defense

This is where National Radon Defense (NRD) leads the way. As North America’s largest and most trusted radon mitigation network, NRD equips business owners with the tools, training, and systems needed to succeed in this fast-growing industry. From proven marketing strategies to operational support, NRD takes the guesswork out of building a radon business. Partnering with NRD allows business owners to step confidently into a market with expanding demand and life-saving impact. Whether it’s residential radon testing or large-scale commercial mitigation, NRD contractors deliver professional results backed by decades of collective experience.

Why Now Is the Time

Lung Cancer Awareness Month isn’t just about prevention; it’s a reminder that action creates opportunity. The need for radon testing and mitigation is only growing, and communities everywhere are seeking trusted professionals to meet that need. For existing contractors, diversifying into radon services can open new revenue streams. For aspiring entrepreneurs, it’s an opportunity to build a purpose-driven business that saves lives and supports public health. As more Americans recognize the importance of clean indoor air, radon mitigation is no longer just a service; it’s a necessity. And those partnered with National Radon Defense are leading the charge, combining expertise, credibility, and compassion to make homes safer across every U.S. territory.
September marks the return of busy hallways, classrooms filled with eager students, and the start of another school year. But while parents and educators focus on books, supplies, and lesson plans, one critical factor often goes unnoticed: the air students breathe inside their schools.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) directly affects the health, performance, and long-term well-being of students and staff. Among the pollutants that compromise IAQ, radon gas stands out as one of the most dangerous, and often overlooked; threats in schools across the U.S. and beyond.

The Hidden Risk in Classrooms

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps into buildings through cracks in foundations, crawl spaces, and gaps around utility penetrations. Invisible, odorless, and tasteless, radon can accumulate indoors at unsafe levels without anyone realizing it.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. For children, the stakes are even higher: their faster breathing rates and developing lungs make them more vulnerable to radon exposure over time. In fact, the EPA estimates that 1 in 5 schools in the United States has at least one classroom with elevated radon levels.

That means thousands of children and teachers are at risk every day simply by showing up to school.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters for Learning

Beyond the life-threatening risks of radon poisoning, radon gas exposure, poor indoor air quality in general has immediate and visible impacts on student success. Studies show that when classrooms have high levels of pollutants like radon, mold, or COâ‚‚ (Carbon Dioxide), students experience:
• Increased headaches, coughing, and asthma symptoms
• Higher rates of absenteeism
• Decreased attention span and concentration
• Lower test scores and academic performance

On the flip side, when schools invest in clean indoor air, the benefits are clear: healthier students, improved attendance, and better learning outcomes. Simply put, good air equals better education.

The Role of Radon Testing and Mitigation

The good news is that radon problems in schools can be solved. The process starts with residential radon testing and commercial testing for schools, which determines whether radon levels exceed the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L. If elevated levels are found, a radon mitigation contractor can install a system that safely reduces radon concentrations.

How does radon mitigation work?

A radon mitigation system typically uses a fan and PVC pipe system to draw radon gas from beneath the school’s foundation and vent it safely outdoors. This method, known as sub-slab depressurization, is highly effective at reducing radon levels.

The cost of a radon mitigation system for schools depends on the size of the building and complexity of installation, but the long-term health benefits far outweigh the expense. Investing in radon reduction ensures that students and teachers breathe safer air year after year.

Radon Gas Exposure Symptoms vs. Silent Threat

Unlike other pollutants, radon does not cause immediate, noticeable symptoms of radon exposure such as coughing or dizziness. Instead, long-term exposure leads to radon-induced lung cancer, often with no warning signs until it’s too late. This makes regular radon testing not just important… it’s essential!

Parents wouldn’t ignore a broken heater in the winter or unsafe drinking water in the cafeteria. Radon should be treated with the same urgency, because the health consequences of doing nothing are severe.

Why Schools Need to Act Now

September’s back-to-school season is the perfect reminder that schools must prioritize health alongside education. Creating a safe learning environment means ensuring every classroom has clean, breathable air.

By partnering with a radon mitigation contractor or joining networks like National Radon Defense, schools and facility managers gain access to proven testing, abatement, and remediation strategies. These partnerships provide not just radon removal, but ongoing support to maintain safe indoor environments.

And the benefits extend beyond the classroom. Parents gain peace of mind, school districts demonstrate responsibility, and communities see healthier, stronger outcomes for their children.

The Bigger Picture: Healthy Air is a Global Mission

Radon doesn’t stop at city limits or state lines. From small towns in the Midwest to large urban districts in the Northeast, radon is a global issue that requires proactive solutions. By spreading awareness, schools can lead the way in protecting future generations from this invisible danger.

In fact, addressing radon in schools also raises awareness for homeowners, reminding families to ask critical questions:
• What is the radon level in my child’s school?
• Have I tested my own home for radon?
• If levels are high, do I know how much a radon mitigation system costs and where to find a qualified contractor?

This creates a ripple effect of healthier homes, healthier schools, and healthier communities.

As the new school year begins, let’s remember that learning starts with the basics and nothing is more basic than the air we breathe. By investing in radon testing, radon abatement, and clean indoor air systems, schools can protect the next generation from a silent yet preventable health threat. Because when kids breathe clean air, they don’t just feel better—they think clearer, learn faster, and build brighter futures.

Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. Do you even the radon mitigation demand or need in your area? No? Yes? Think again. We're making it simple for you with this blog.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps into homes through cracks and openings in the foundation. You can’t see, smell, or taste it, but it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., just behind smoking. Homeowners rarely think about it until it becomes a problem. And that's where certified radon mitigation contractors step in. By offering residential radon testing and mitigation, you can help homeowners identify unsafe levels and install systems that keep their families safe.

The Demand for Radon Reduction/Mitigation Is Growing

*This EPA radon map updated as of December 2024.

With more states enacting radon disclosure laws and buyers demanding testing during real estate transactions, radon services are no longer optional, they’re expected.

And here's what people are asking:

What are the symptoms of radon gas exposure?

How much is a radon mitigation system?

What’s the cost of radon remediation?

How does radon mitigation work?

These questions lead to thousands of Google searches every month and your business could be the one showing up with the answers.

Radon Services = High Value + Low Overhead

Unlike other services in home improvement or inspection, radon removal is a high-value, low-equipment-cost operation. Once you’re trained and certified, you don’t need heavy machinery or large crews. A typical residential radon mitigation system cost ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 with a solid profit margin when done right. And if you’re concerned about logistics, NRD makes it easy. Their system walks you through everything from customer acquisition and quoting to system design and follow-up testing.

Why Choose National Radon Defense?

There are plenty of ways to enter the radon business — but none as turnkey, proven, and supportive as National Radon Defense. Here’s what sets them apart:

✅ Proven Training and Certification

You’ll receive comprehensive training that covers radon science, mitigation design, and sales strategies. You'll become a certified radon mitigation contractor ready to perform residential radon testing and full abatement with confidence.

✅ Tools to Win Jobs

With Treehouse Marketing’s custom websites, you’ll rank for local keywords like “radon mitigation system cost” and “radon gas symptoms.” Plus, NRD’s Radon Shield Pro software makes quoting and tracking simple.

✅ Built-in Support Network

You’re never on your own. NRD dealers across North America share best practices, data, and support. And NRD University keeps your team trained and competitive with up-to-date knowledge on radon removal and reduction.

✅ Mission with Meaning

This isn’t just about revenue. When you help a homeowner eliminate radon, you're potentially saving lives. That kind of impact doesn’t come with every job.

What’s It Like Being an NRD Dealer?

You tested for radon, got a system installed, and saw improvement in your indoor air... what should you know next?

If you've ever looked into protecting your home from radon, you've probably asked yourself, “Once it’s removed… where does it go?” It’s a great question and as a company dedicated to improving indoor air quality, we love helping people understand how radon mitigation really works.

At National Radon Defense, we believe education leads to action, and action saves lives.

Understanding What Radon Is First

Radon is a radioactive gas that naturally forms when uranium breaks down in soil and rock. It’s invisible, odorless, and tasteless, which means it can accumulate in your home without you even knowing it. Long-term radon gas exposure can lead to radon poisoning, with radon exposure symptoms including persistent cough, chest pain, and, ultimately, lung cancer. In fact, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.

That’s why radon remediation, or radon reduction, is so critical.

So… How Does Radon Mitigation Work?

Here’s the simple version: A radon mitigation contractor installs a system that pulls radon gas from beneath your home and vents it safely outside before it ever enters your living space.

This process is called sub-slab depressurization (yes, it sounds intense but it works). A pipe is inserted through the foundation slab or crawl space, connected to a fan that continuously sucks the gas out from beneath your home, and vents it above the roofline where it safely dissipates into the outdoor air. And no, radon doesn’t “build up” outside. Outdoors, it’s so diluted in the atmosphere until gone that it poses no health risk.

Where Does the Radon Gas Go?

Once it's pulled out by the radon mitigation fan, it travels up the venting system and disperses into the open air; harmlessly. Because radon gas is naturally occurring in the soil, the goal of radon reduction isn't to eliminate it from existence, but to prevent it from concentrating inside your home where it becomes dangerous. Think of it like a chimney. Just as smoke needs to be vented outdoors, radon needs a proper path to escape safely one that keeps your family protected.

Estimate Radon Mitigation System Cost

We get this question all the time: How much is a radon mitigation system? The answer can vary depending on your home’s size, foundation type, and local soil conditions, but on average: The radon mitigation system cost typically ranges from $800 up to $3,500 depending on the structure. Most homeowners will find that their radon mitigation cost lands around the $1,200 to $1,500 mark but again, it will always depend upon the home or area. It’s a one-time investment that provides long-term peace of mind

When you consider what’s at stake like your family’s health, the cost of a radon mitigation system is a small price to pay.

Why Choosing the Right Contractor Matters

Not all mitigation systems are created equal. Choosing a qualified radon mitigation contractor ensures your system is installed properly, is code-compliant, and effectively reduces radon levels. That’s why we recommend working with a certified National Radon Defense dealer in your area. They’re trained to diagnose your home correctly, explain everything clearly, and design a system that’s right for your situation.

What Radon Can Do To You

If you haven’t tested your home yet, it’s the first step. You can pick up a low-cost radon test kit, or contact one of our trusted professionals for a more comprehensive evaluation. And if you’ve already tested and found high levels—don’t panic. Mitigation is straightforward, affordable, and effective.

If you've noticed water dripping from your radon pipe or near your radon system, it's natural to ask, "Can rain get into my radon pipe?" The answer is yes, it can. But the real question is whether that water is a problem.

Let’s take a look at what rain can do to your radon system, what’s normal, what’s not, and what actions you should take if you see moisture in or around your radon reduction system.

Can Rain Enter a Radon Pipe?

Radon mitigation systems work by pulling radon gas from beneath your home using a radon fan, also known as a radon pump. That gas is then vented safely through piping that usually exits above the roofline.

Since the exhaust pipe is open to the outdoors, it’s completely normal for a small amount of rain to enter the pipe. This is not a design flaw. A properly installed radon system will be able to handle this without any trouble.

When Rain Is Not a Problem in A Radon Mitigation System

If your system was installed correctly by professional radon installation contractors, a little rain won’t hurt anything. In fact, your system is built to manage it. Here’s why:

· The pipe is sloped correctly to allow any water to drain out

· The radon fan creates enough airflow to keep moisture from collecting

· High-quality Schedule 40 PVC is used, which resists moisture buildup

· Seals and joints are properly secured to avoid leaks

In most cases, any rain that enters the system simply evaporates or flows back out without ever causing a problem.

When to Be Concerned About Radon in Water

The question is, can radon contaminate your water? The answer is YES!

While most people know radon as a dangerous gas found in the air, many don’t realize that radon can also contaminate your water supply. If your home uses well water or groundwater, there’s a chance radon is dissolving into the water you drink. Ingesting radon-contaminated water may increase the risk of stomach cancer.

Although waterborne radon causes fewer deaths compared to airborne radon exposure about 92% less it’s still a health risk worth addressing. That’s why experts recommend testing your water for radon, especially if you're already taking steps to improve indoor air quality.

Should I Be Concerned if Rain Water Goes Inside the Radon Fan?

If you notice actual dripping water or moisture accumulating near your radon pipe or fan, it could signal a larger issue. Here are some red flags to look for:

· Water stains or puddles near the base of the pipe

· A loud or weak radon fan

· Visible water dripping from pipe joints

· High radon levels on your follow-up test

These could be signs that water is pooling inside the system instead of draining properly. That can affect the performance of your radon fan and even reduce the system’s ability to lower radon levels.

What You Should Do

If you’re seeing signs of water where it shouldn’t be, here’s what to do next:

Check your radon fan. If it’s not running or sounds different than usual, it may need servicing or replacement.

Look at the pipe layout. Pipes should slope slightly downward toward the suction point so that water doesn’t collect.

Contact a certified radon contractor. A quick inspection can help you avoid bigger issues.

It’s also smart to do regular testing for radon, especially after storms or seasonal changes. Testing ensures your system is still keeping levels low.

What Not to Do

Don’t try to cap the top of the radon pipe to keep rain out. This will block airflow and make the system ineffective.

Don’t ignore the signs of water. Moisture buildup can affect your home’s air quality and lead to higher radon levels.

Don’t attempt DIY repairs on your radon pump or fan. Professional tools and knowledge are required for proper function and safety.

Protecting Your Health Starts with Your Air

In honor of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, we focus on an issue that impacts us all but affects some communities more than others: radon gas exposure. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, claiming over 21,000 lives in the U.S. annually. Behind these numbers is a fight for health equity and community protection.

Radon affects Black, Indigenous, and people of color disproportionately, particularly those living in older neighborhoods or mining regions where radon levels are higher. Limited awareness and resources often leave these communities at greater risk of lung cancer. At National Radon Defense, we are committed to ensuring every community has the tools they need to test for radon and mitigate its dangers.

Women are critical in the fight against radon. Researchers like Dr. Linda H. Ziegler, an epidemiologist at the National Cancer Institute, are advancing our understanding of radon’s role in lung cancer, especially among vulnerable populations. Their work is driving progress in lung cancer prevention. In a most recent article, radon is even now possibly linked to Gestational Diabetes.

Women, women of color, anyone who considers women -- women, are also leading policy changes. Like our very own, Jacquelyn Nixon from CR3, her advocacy for radon reduction in schools and public youth awareness is just one example. Women’s leadership is crucial to making radon awareness and mitigation a priority across communities.

At National Radon Defense, we stand beside these women and others who work relentlessly to protect public health and prevent radon-related lung cancer. Whether they’re scientists, advocates, or community leaders, women are making a real impact.

Our mission extends to supporting women across all areas of the fight. From radon mitigation technicians to health advocates, women are definitely driving change. We are proud to amplify their voices and work to create a safer, healthier future for everyone.

As we honor Black History and Women’s History Month, let’s celebrate the contributions of women who are advancing lung cancer research and protecting homes from radon. Their efforts are essential to building a more equitable and healthier world.

This radon race isn’t just about awareness—it’s about action as radon does not discriminate. At National Radon Defense, we’re committed to tackling the systemic barriers that put vulnerable communities at risk. Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind and work toward a future where radon no longer takes lives.

This is part of NRD's mission as they walk their statement ‘Clearing Air, Saving Lives’. Let’s continue to empower women, celebrate their efforts, contributions, and their dedication to protect our communities from the dangers of radon.

Even if your home got results of low radon levels, it might not stay that way. Learn why consistent testing and radon mitigation are still important for long-term home safety.

Actual radon testing result of a home, it might lower than EPA recommendation (4.0) but still they decided to get a radon mitigation system installed.

When most homeowners hear about radon gas, they assume it's a problem only if the levels are high. So when a radon test comes back with a low reading below the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L, it’s easy to breathe a sigh of relief and move on. This is so wrong!

But here’s the big question: If your home doesn’t currently have high radon levels, do you still need a radon mitigation system? The answer may surprise you, and it's more important than many realize. Let’s explore the risks, the science, and why even homes with “low” radon levels shouldn’t ignore this silent threat.

What Is Radon and Why Should You Care About It?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium in soil, rock, and water breaks down. It enters homes through cracks in the foundation, crawl spaces, sump pumps, and even through well water. You can’t see, smell, or taste radon, and that’s what makes it so dangerous. According to the EPA, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths each year.

Remember, radon isn't really the problem.. it's the decay what makes it dangerous! So, when you see “low” levels on your test, it doesn’t mean you’re completely in the clear or safe.

Understanding “Low” Radon Levels: Why It’s Not a Fixed Number nor A Safe Radon Level

Radon levels in your home fluctuate constantly. Factors like weather, ventilation, soil moisture, home renovations, and even how often windows are opened can influence the radon concentration in your living space. You might have a radon reading of 1.5 pCi/L today but in the winter, during heavy rains, or after sealing your basement, that number could easily rise above the recommended action level.

In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends taking action when radon levels are at or above 2.7 pCi/L which is lower than the EPA’s recommendation threshold!

Zero (0) is still the best!

Should You Wait to Mitigate Until Radon Levels Are High?

These are actual results of homeowners who started with a 'low' radon level result from their initial testing. They did have a radon test retake after a few months and here is their result!

Here’s the problem with the “wait and see” approach: Radon damage is cumulative. The longer you and your family are exposed, even at lower levels, the greater your long-term risk of developing lung cancer. Just like smoking one cigarette might not give you cancer today, consistent exposure to even moderate radon levels can add up over time. Is it reap what you sow? Why gamble with your health?

Benefits of Mitigating Low Radon Levels Early

This is an actual radon test kit from one of our dealers in Nebraska - Radon Defense Midwest!

Prevention is always better than cure! Investing in a radon mitigation system before levels become dangerous offers several benefits:

1. Proactive Health Protection Move: A radon mitigation system ensures that radon stays at the lowest levels possible, protecting your family from long-term exposure, no matter the season or condition of your home.

2. Stable Indoor Air Quality: Radon mitigation systems often improve overall air circulation and can help reduce other indoor air pollutants, especially when combined with other Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) solutions.

3. Higher Home Resale Value: Homes with a professionally installed mitigation system are often more attractive to buyers and real estate listings nowadays. It’s one less concern during inspection and adds to your home’s long-term value. It's starting to become a requirement in other states actually!

4. Peace of Mind: Why worry about when or if radon levels will spike? With a mitigation system, you’re in control of your home’s safety—every day of the year.

When Should You Install a Radon Mitigation System?

Even if your radon test reads below 4.0 pCi/L, you should consider mitigation if:

Your levels are between 1.0–3.9 pCi/L

You’ve experienced foundation changes or renovations

You plan to spend more time in the basement or lower levels

You plan to work from home or do remote work

You live in a high-risk radon zone (most states do!)

You’ve never retested your home during different season

You've started to experience radon poising symptoms

How Often Should You Test for Radon?

Even after a low initial reading, it’s essential to test your home every 2 years, or after major changes to your home’s structure. Radon test kits are inexpensive and widely available—but for the most accurate results, consider hiring a National Radon Defense radon professional. You can always get a free estimate, so no budget shockers here!

Final Thoughts: Low Radon Level Results Doesn’t Mean No Risk!

Radon is a long game we've battling since. The key to protecting your home and family isn’t just reacting when levels are high, it’s about staying ahead of the risk. A low radon reading today doesn’t guarantee safety tomorrow. We've had met a lot of clients who were cancer patients, they tell their story, and it's always their biggest regret of not mitigating soon enough. Think of radon mitigation like smoke alarms: just because you haven’t had a fire doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared.

So if your radon test shows low levels, it’s not a reason to relax, it’s a reason to make an informed decision. Talk to your local National Radon Defense dealer/radon professional about your options, and keep your family safe from the dangers of radon gas all year long!

What Is the Best Radon Mitigation System?

This is a usual question we get as radon professionals. There are a lot of different types and strategies, the big question mark here is.. if it does the job? Here's why you need to know the importance of choosing the best radon mitigation system that is ideal for your home or business structure.

What Is Radon and Why Is It Dangerous?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms from the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes, and even well water. Long-term exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, making mitigation essential.

How Does Radon Enter A Home?

Cracks in the foundation and basement floors

Gaps around pipes, drains, and sump pumps

Crawl spaces and poorly sealed walls

Well water used for drinking and bathing

Types of Radon Remediation System:

Sub-Slab Depressurization (SSD) Systems – The most effective and widely used system. A vent pipe is installed under the foundation to draw radon gas out before it enters the home.

Drainage Systems – These systems help redirect radon-laden water away from the home, reducing overall radon levels.

Crawl Space Mitigation Techniques – Includes sealing crawl spaces with specialized vapor barriers and installing ventilation fans to prevent radon accumulation.

Passive Radon Mitigation Systems – Installed in new homes, these systems rely on natural airflow to reduce radon but may require an active fan if levels remain high.

Evaluating the Best Radon Reduction Systems

You could find yourself asking if you have the best radon mitigation system for your home or the client you service for, but remember... it's not about the best, it's about if it does the job!

Note, this information is by NRD Dealers' market line and homeowner preference through the years:

1. Sub-Slab Depressurization (SSD) Radon Mitigation Systems:

Rating: Highly Preferred.
Reasons:

This is generally considered the most requested system, most commonly installed

It's applicable to a wide range of average American (United States of America) homes with slab-on-grade or basement foundations.

When properly installed, it can significantly reduce radon levels.

2. Crawl Space Radon Mitigation Technique:

Rating: Situationally Preferred.
Reasons:

Essential for homes with crawl spaces.

Proper ealing and ventilation can effectively address radon entry and moisture from these areas.

This method is very necessary when needing to address radon issues in homes with crawl spaces

3. Drainage Radon Mitigation System:

Rating: Less Common, Supplemental

Reasons:

Primarily used when radon entry is associated with water intrusion.

Often used in conjunction with other mitigation methods.

Less often the sole mitigation method since effectiveness may vary depending on the specific drainage issues.

4. Passive Radon Mitigation System:

Rating: Varied, Often Upgraded
Reasons:

Lower initial cost, as they rely on natural airflow

Commonly installed in new construction or commercial structures

Often needs to be upgraded to an active system

*Highlighted concerns:

May not be effective in homes with high radon levels.

Most of the time requires conversion to an active system for optimal performance

Reliance on natural air flow, which is not always reliable

*NRD Dealers are always transparent with each client case and upholds integrity on which radon mitigation system advised to be installed. It's not always the case that if it would cost more, it would be more effective. It really points out on how it would work on your house type and radon levels.

Choosing the Right Radon Mitigation System

Always remember best is not best when it is not the correct one for you. Know these tips before going into the decision:

Efficiency: Look for radon mitigation companies who have a proven service line to reduce radon levels by 90% or more.

Cost: Prices vary, with professional systems ranging from $1000 to $2,500 on a minimum, higher if depending on the structure to mitigate.

Home Design Compatibility: Some systems work better in basements, while others are suited for crawl spaces. None of these not necessary means you cannot mitigate radon, there is always a solution for each home.

Professional Installation vs. DIY: Professional-installed systems are generally more effective and reliable.

Health Effects of Radon Exposure: Can Radon Give You Cancer?

YES, 100%! Radon is never a myth, hoax, fraud, gimmick.. you name it. It has been discovered for a reason. While radon exposure primarily increases the risk of lung cancer, some people report symptoms such as:

Persistent cough

Headaches

Fatigue

Respiratory issues

Just now this early year, radon exposure has been linked to Leukemia, Asthma and even Gestational Diabetes!

What Radon Levels Are Considered Dangerous?

EPA Recommended Action Level: 4.0 pCi/L or higher

Who is EPA and how does it connect to radon? EPA stands for the Environmental Protection Agency, and it is primarily connected with radon because it is the government agency responsible for educating the public about the risks of radon exposure in homes and buildings, recommending action levels for radon mitigation, and conducting research on the issue; essentially making it the leading authority on radon in the United States.

WHO Radon Recommended Mitigation Level: 2.7 pCi/L or higher

Who is WHO and how does it connect to radon? WHO stands for World Health Organization, and it connects with radon because the organization has classified radon as a known human carcinogen, meaning radon gas poisoning is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, and they actively work to raise awareness about the dangers of radon exposure and encourage countries to take measures to reduce radon levels in homes and buildings globally; essentially, WHO considers radon a significant public health concern due to its potential to cause lung cancer.

Any Detectable Radon: While lower levels pose less risk, there is no completely "safe" level of radon exposure

There are a lot of organizations as well who relate to radon and it's negative impact to human health. That is the reason why awareness for prevention is always being highlighted to the public. Do not that there are no declared safe levels as yet! The best radon level is still zero/0.

Professional Radon Testing and Mitigation Services: How to Choose the Right Radon Mitigation Contractor?

Look for certified professionals with experience in radon reduction.

Check customer reviews and ratings.

Request multiple quotes to compare services and pricing.

Ensure the system includes a fan and monitoring device to verify effectiveness.

The Importance of Regular Radon Testing

Even after mitigation, radon levels can fluctuate due to home modifications or seasonal changes. Radon levels has also been proven to be higher on the winter months or season. Regular testing ensures continued protection.

Less to No Cost Radon Reduction Strategies You Can Do

Improve Ventilation: Increase airflow in basements and crawl spaces.

Seal Cracks and Gaps: Prevent radon from seeping in through foundation cracks and wall openings.

Use Radon Test Kits: Regularly monitor radon levels to ensure they remain low.

Limitations and Risks of DIY Radon Mitigation/Remediation Methods

You name it, radon remediation, radon abatement, radon reduction, radon mitigation... DIY mitigation can help but is often less effective than professional systems. No guarantee of making it work the first time either, so doubling the costs. Sealing cracks and increasing ventilation may lower radon levels, but they rarely eliminate the problem completely.

Protect Your Home and Health

Radon exposure is a serious health risk, but mitigation is both effective and accessible. Whether you're buying a home, already live in a high-radon area, or want peace of mind, investing in a radon mitigation system is one of the best decisions you can make. Take action today and schedule a radon test or consult a professional to assess your home’s radon levels. Your health—and your family’s—depends on it.

National Radon Defense Dealers are the go-to for anything radon since they are tailor-fit to have the right tools and training to eliminate this problem. Guaranteed no double costs on your wallet! To start, here's a free estimate for you.

Building Your Business: The Profitable World of Radon Business

As business owners, we tend to think about how to grow our business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's a full-time job and most times, a one-man show. Should we franchise or should we come up on our own? We always need new strategies or approach to survive this fast-paced world. In today's competitive business landscape, diversification is crucial for long-term success. One strategic move that can significantly impact your bottom line while contributing to the public is entering the radon remediation or radon industry market. So, is a radon mitigation business franchise worth it it? We'll let you know why.

Understanding Why Radon is High Demand

A lot of people in the U.S. are not yer familiar on how much damage radon can do if left unmitigated. By the basics, radon is actually a naturally occurring radioactive gas that emanates from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It can seep into homes and buildings through cracks in foundations, floors, and walls. While invisible and odorless, radon exposure poses a significant health risk, being the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after smoking.

Radon Defense Midwest (Nebraska NRD Dealer) President was interviewed by WOWT6 to raise awareness about this harmful gas.

Aiming the Business Opportunity: Why Diversify with Radon Mitigation?

The demand for radon testing and mitigation services is steadily increasing as awareness grows. This presents a unique opportunity for businesses to:

Tap into a Growing Market: With millions of homes potentially affected by elevated radon levels, the market for mitigation services is substantial and expanding. Note that 1 in 15 U.S. homes are affected by radon.

Enhance Service Offerings: By adding radon testing and mitigation to your existing services (e.g., home inspections, construction, HVAC), you offer a comprehensive solution for indoor air quality. This is best with home inspection service as the core.

Increase Profitability: Mitigation services can provide a consistent revenue stream, especially during off-peak seasons for other services.

Improve Brand Reputation: Positioning your business as an expert in indoor air quality enhances your credibility and builds trust with clients.

Help Save Lives: Each home you build a radon mitigation with, a lot of lives potentially saved.

How to start a Radon Mitigation Business?

How to Start Building a Successful Radon Mitigation Business?

Here are the basics on what you need to equip yourself with:

Obtain Necessary Certifications and Licenses: Research and obtain the required licenses and certifications in your area. Consider professional training programs offered by organizations like the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP).

Invest in Quality Equipment: Invest in reliable radon testing equipment such as continuous radon monitors (CRMs) and short-term detectors. Purchase high-quality mitigation systems, including sub-slab depressurization systems, sump pump systems, and soil suction systems.

Develop a Strong Business Plan: Define your target market (residential, commercial, real estate professionals). Outline your pricing strategy, marketing plan, and customer service approach. Consider offering bundled packages with other services for increased value.

Build Key Relationships: Network with companies who are known in the radon mitigation business - such as National Radon Defense. You can also meet other home inspectors, contractors, and other industry professionals. Collaborate with local health departments and community organizations to raise awareness about radon risks.

Effective Marketing and Outreach: Utilize old and new marketing strategies. Usually, getting to know how to advertise via online is best and digital marketing.

*Pro Tip: You don't need to start from scratch to know where to get every detail and information on all of these. By becoming a dealer at National Radon Defense, everything is trained and handed to you easily. Everything you need to know about the ins and outs of diversifying with radon mitigation.

The Most-Awaited Question: How Much Can You Earn in the Radon Mitigation Business or a Radon Business Franchise?

The answer? A lot. There are a lot of successful radon installation contractors out there. Well, if you know how to handle and strategize it well ofcourse.
How National Radon Defense Embodies National Radon Action Month

Every January, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and health advocates across the nation observe National Radon Action Month, a campaign designed to raise awareness about radon gas—a silent, invisible threat and the second leading cause of lung cancer. 21,000+ lives are lost annually to this naturally occurring gas, which seeps into homes and workplaces undetected without proper testing. National Radon Defense’s tagline, “Clearing Air, Saving Lives,” perfectly encapsulates its mission to combat this danger, aligning seamlessly with the goals of National Radon Action Month.

Understanding the Radon Risk

Radon gas is produced by the natural decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. Outdoors, radon disperses harmlessly, but when trapped indoors, it can accumulate to dangerous levels. The EPA estimates that 1 in 15 homes in the U.S. has elevated radon levels, posing serious health risks over time.

Radon’s invisibility makes it particularly dangerous: it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It doesn’t discriminate either. It can be found in any living area. Without proactive measures such as testing and mitigation, families may remain unaware of the threat in their homes. National Radon Defense (NRD) bridges this gap, providing solutions and raising awareness.

Aligning Mission with Message: “Clearing Air, Saving Lives”

NRD’s tagline is more than a slogan—it’s a call to action. “Clearing Air” represents transparency and education, ensuring homeowners are informed about radon risks. “Saving Lives” highlights the ultimate goal: protecting communities from radon’s harmful effects.

This aligns with National Radon Action Month’s objective of encouraging radon testing and action. NRD’s professional testing and mitigation services turn awareness into life-saving solutions.

The Power of Prevention

Radon mitigation is a proactive step toward safeguarding health. NRD ensures homeowners understand the importance of testing and taking swift action. By educating families and offering reliable mitigation systems, NRD empowers individuals to protect their homes.
A simple radon test followed by mitigation can reduce radon levels by up to 99%. For many families, safety begins with awareness to act.

Amplifying Awareness During National Radon Action Month

NRD amplifies its efforts on this event to raise awareness. Collaborating with local communities and health organizations such as CR3 and CLEHR Network, the company uses National Radon Action Month to educate the public about testing and mitigation. NRD’s initiative is to motivate individuals to prioritize testing before it’s too late.

A Personal Connection to the Cause

NRD and National Radon Action Month addresses a universal concern: home safety. Every homeowner values the peace of mind that comes with “clearing the air” and “saving lives.”
Consider the Smith family, who discovered elevated radon levels during a home inspection. With NRD’s guidance, they installed a mitigation system, reducing radon levels to safe limits. Inspired by their experience, the Smiths now advocate for radon awareness in their community.

A Lifetime Commitment

NRD was established since 2007, serving 50+ Territories all around North America. In that, NRD envisions a future where radon-induced lung cancer is rare. By refining methods and expanding outreach, the company ensures its tagline remains a living promise. “Clearing Air, Saving Lives” is more than just a tagline —it’s a rallying cry. This January, its message takes on greater significance, urging communities to address radon’s silent threat.

Through awareness and innovation, NRD has become a trusted ally in the fight against radon exposure. NRD is here for you, dedicated to transform homes to safe places – one at a time.

What Are the Symptoms of High Radon Exposure or High Radon Levels?

You're here for a reason, you might have one of these symptoms. Fear not! We are here to explain.

One of radon’s most dangerous qualities is its lack of immediate symptoms. Unlike other harmful substances, you won’t feel, taste, or smell radon. This makes it impossible to detect without proper testing. However, over time, radon exposure can lead to significant health issues.

The most serious health concern associated with radon is lung cancer. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, surpassed only by smoking. Early symptoms of lung cancer that may arise from prolonged radon exposure include:

Persistent coughing that doesn’t go away.

Chest pain or tightness.

Wheezing or shortness of breath.

Recurring respiratory infections like bronchitis or pneumonia.

Coughing up blood.

These symptoms often appear only after extensive damage has occurred. If you experience any of these issues, consult a healthcare provider or doctor immediately. However, the best course of action is prevention through testing and mitigation.

Can You Recover from Radon Poisoning or Radon Exposure?

There’s no way to reverse exposure to radon itself, as the gas leaves no physical traces once you’ve been exposed. However, the health effects caused by radon, such as lung cancer, can be treated if detected early. Regular health screenings are essential, especially if you live in a high-radon area or have been exposed to elevated levels over time.

Preventing future exposure is the best solution. Reducing radon levels in your home significantly lowers your risk of developing health complications.

How Quickly Can Radon Affect You?

Radon doesn’t cause immediate harm. Its effects accumulate over time, often taking years to manifest. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of lung cancer, particularly for smokers. The length of exposure and the concentration of radon both play a role in determining your level of risk.

What Homes Are Most at Risk for Radon?

Radon can infiltrate any home, regardless of its age, design, or location. However, certain factors make some homes more vulnerable than others:

Basements and Crawl Spaces: Homes with basements or crawl spaces are at higher risk because radon enters from the ground and accumulates in lower levels.

Poor Ventilation: Poorly ventilated homes trap radon, allowing levels to build up over time.

Foundation Cracks: Cracks in floors, walls, and foundations provide easy entry points for radon gas.

High-risk zones are typically located in areas with uranium-rich soil. However, radon is present everywhere, making testing essential for all homes.

How to Detect Radon in Your Home

Radon is undetectable without specialized equipment. Testing is the only way to know if your home has elevated radon levels. There are two primary ways to test:\

DIY Test Kits: Affordable and easy to use, these kits are available online or at hardware stores. Place the kit in the lowest livable area of your home for a designated period (often 2–7 days) and send it to a lab for analysis.

Professional Testing: Hiring a certified radon professional ensures accurate results and provides peace of mind.

Check your local government or health department for radon maps that indicate areas with high average levels.

What Causes Radon, and Where Is It Found?

Radon forms naturally as uranium in the soil breaks down into radium, which then decays into radon gas. This gas seeps through the ground and enters homes through:

Cracks in foundations, floors, and walls.

Gaps around service pipes.

Construction joints.

Well water in some cases.

Radon is most commonly found in:

Areas with high uranium concentrations in the soil.

Basements and lower levels of homes, where the gas accumulates due to its weight.

Regions with poor ventilation or older construction techniques.

What Happens When Radon Levels Are High in Your Home?

High radon levels can have significant health consequences. The longer you are exposed to elevated radon levels, the higher your risk of developing lung cancer. Radon gas decays into radioactive particles that become trapped in your lungs when you breathe, damaging lung tissue over time.

5 Quick Facts About Radon

Silent and Invisible Threat: Radon is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, making it impossible to detect without testing.

Lung Cancer Risk: Radon exposure is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the U.S.

Every Home at Risk: No home or structure is immune to radon; testing is necessary regardless of location.

Seasonal Fluctuations: Radon levels often increase in winter when homes are sealed and ventilation decreases.

Mitigation Works: Radon mitigation systems can reduce levels by up to 99%.

How to Remove, Mitigation, Prevent Radon from Your Home

If testing reveals high radon levels, mitigation is essential. Here are the most effective methods:

Sub-Slab Depressurization: A radon mitigation system uses a fan and vent pipe to draw radon out from beneath your home and release it safely outdoors.

Sealing Cracks: Sealing cracks in floors, walls, and foundations helps prevent radon from entering your home.

Improved Ventilation: Increasing ventilation reduces radon accumulation, especially in basements and crawl spaces.

Professional mitigation systems are the most reliable solution for significantly reducing radon levels.

When Is Radon Highest?

...or when are radon levels high? Radon levels can fluctuate throughout the day and year. They are typically highest:

At Night: Reduced ventilation during nighttime can cause levels to spike.

In Winter: Sealing homes against cold weather traps radon inside, increasing concentrations.

Regular testing ensures you’re aware of any seasonal or daily fluctuations.

How to Reduce Radon Levels Quickly

If radon levels are dangerously high, take immediate action:

Ventilation: Open windows and use fans to increase airflow temporarily.

Professionaly-Installed Radon Mitigation System: Install a sub-slab depressurization system as a long-term solution. Consult a licensed professional.

Seal Entry Points: Seal cracks and openings in your home’s foundation to minimize radon entry.

Protecting Your Home and Health

Radon has been known to be a silent and invisible threat to most living things, but it’s one you can address with the right knowledge and tools. Regular testing, awareness of radon symptoms, and proactive mitigation can protect your family from its health risks. Whether you live in a high-risk area or not, testing your home and taking preventative measures is the key to long-term safety. Stay informed, act quickly, and make radon awareness a priority for your home.
Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas that can be found in homes and buildings throughout the United States. It is produced naturally from the breakdown of uranium in the soil, and it can enter your home through cracks in the foundation, walls, or floors. While radon exposure is a serious health hazard, many people are unaware of the risks it poses.

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into homes and buildings. Radon as a chemical element, is a heavy radioactive gas of Group 18 (noble gases) of the periodic table and it t is produced from the breakdown of uranium in the soil and can enter homes through cracks in the foundation, walls, or floors. Radon's atomic number is 86 and symbolized as "Rn".

Why is Radon Dangerous? What Does Radon Do?

If your home has high levels of radon, there are several ways to reduce it. These include:

1. Installing a radon mitigation system: This is the most effective way to reduce radon levels in your home. A radon mitigation system vents radon gas out of your home.

2. Sealing cracks and holes: Radon can enter your home through cracks and holes in your foundation, walls, or floors. Sealing these cracks can help to reduce radon levels.

3. Improving indoor ventilation: Increasing ventilation in your home can also help to reduce radon levels.

Radon - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is radon a problem in all areas of the United States?

A: Radon can be found in homes and buildings throughout the United States. However, some areas of the country have higher radon levels than others.

Q: Can radon be detected by smell or sight?

A: No, radon is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. The only way to detect radon is to test for it.

Q: Is radon a new problem?

A: Radon has been a known health hazard for many years. However, it was not until the 1980s that widespread testing for radon began.

Q: Can radon be dangerous even at low levels?

A: While high levels of radon pose the greatest risk, even low levels of radon can increase your risk of lung cancer.

Q: Is it expensive to install a radon mitigation system? Is a radon mitigation system expensive?

A: The cost of installing a radon mitigation system varies depending on the size of your home and the complexity of the installation. However, most radon mitigation systems are relatively affordable.

Q: Why do we need to be scared of radon?

A: Long term radon exposure can cause lung cancer and other health conditions. Prevention is always better than cure.

Q: Is a radon mitigation system loud or noisy?

A: Radon mitigation systems are generally quite quiet. The noise they produce is typically comparable to a gentle breeze or the hum of a refrigerator.

It is important to be aware of the risks of radon and to take steps to protect yourself and your family. By testing your home for radon and taking appropriate measures like contacting your local National Radon Defense dealer to reduce radon levels, you can help to create a healthier living environment.

In observance of National Radon Action Month, National Radon Defense was recently featured on WOWTV 6 News, Omaha’s NBC affiliate news channel. Reporter Katie Stukey interviewed Curt Drew, owner and president of National Radon Defense, discussing the dangers of radon gas and the benefits of radon mitigation.

With headquarters in Omaha, Neb., Drew and his team are well aware of the dangers of radon. Iowa claims the highest concentration of radon gas in the U.S., while the eastern part of Nebraska also has elevated levels, and the entire U.S. sees a variety of radon levels.

"We get calls every day here at National Radon Defense from companies around the country that are in the service industry and have people asking them about radon and how do I prevent radon and they contact us,” Drew told WOWTV 6 News. "We bring 'em to Omaha, we train 'em in how to mitigate radon and test radon. It's a very growing industry."

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and is blamed for an estimated 15 percent of lung cancer deaths nationwide or as many as 30,000 deaths each year. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that seeps into buildings through cracks in the foundation and can rise to dangerous levels when stuck in a tight, enclosed space. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a safe radon level is below 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).

After a radon test is conducted and elevated levels of radon are found, a radon mitigation system can be installed to return levels to normal. Drew explained that radon mitigation involves pulling radon to a suction point and releasing it out of the building and into the atmosphere where it’s safe.

About National Radon Defense

National Radon Defense is an international network of leading radon professionals who strive to provide their local customers with the best value in radon testing and mitigation services.
