During an inspection of this Queenstown, MD home the homeowners complained of comfort issues in this upstairs room. The room was always hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It was clear that these knee walls had little to no insulation behind them.
The problem with having vents in your crawl space is that in the winter they let in cold air which travels directly into your home. Floors above can become very cold due to cold air traveling between the floors and the insulation. In the summer time the vents let in hot air which mixes with the cool conditions of the crawl space. This causes condensation to form on everything throughout the crawl space.  When this happens, microbial growth occurs which can attract insects and cause wood rot. 
It is recommended in most areas of the United States that a home have R-60 insulation in their attics. This is the equivalent of 20" deep fiberglass batting. Cathedral ceilings only allow for 6"-11" of insulation so in order to get the highest R-Value possible our Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva team is dense packing this cathedral ceiling in Cambridge, MD with TruSoft cellulose insulation. Here the team has already removed the ridge vent and and two courses of roof shingles and have also cut back 4" sections of the roof sheathing to gain access.  
In an attempt to be comfortable in their home these Kent County residents had batted fiberglass insulation placed on top of the existing bown-in fiberglass.
This small entrance is the only way to access the attic. The thin plywood "door" does very little in regards to keeping the air in the attic and home separated. 
Due to excessive moisture in this Salisbury, MD crawl space the insulation has become damaged and has begun to fall down in loose pieces.
