Replacing a Porch in Hamden, CT

This homeowner in Hamden, CT called us originally hoping that we would be able to help her with her roof and gutters. Once we had completed that work on her home, she called us back wondering if we could help her with her porch as well. Years of untreated roof issues had led to other problems in the home. With the porch, the support beams and columns were rotting. She was hoping that she would be able to replace them to make it look good as new!

We replaced the rotting beams with pressure-treated lumber.

Now, this homeowner's porch is renewed and will be great for years to come!

Encapsulating a Crawl Space in Unionville, CT

This homeowner in Unionville, CT called us hoping that we would be able to take a look at his insulation. He was experiencing a lot of issues with rooms that were uneven temperatures. When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived in the home, he noted that one issue in the home was the crawlspace. It was poorly insulated and unencapsulated, meaning that cold air was coming in from outside and traveling through the entire house.

We were able to help this homeowner by utilizing our CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation system - with a few modifications for the home itself.

We started by utilizing our two-part expanding spray foam to insulate around the base of the (now unused) chimney that is in the crawl space. Then, we got to work. We started by adding SilverGlo™ foam board insulation on the walls. SilverGlo™ has graphite infused into the foam, increasing its R-value by 24% over standard foam. Then, we added two-part expanding spray foam to the rim joist and over the sill plate until it met the SilverGlo™, forming a barrier. Then, we laid out dimpled drainage mat on the floor, creating airspace as well as a thermal break. Dimpled drainage mat also has the bonus of forcing any water that may occur under the mat to go to the lowest point of the crawl space. We then added TerraBlock™ floor insulation over top of that. After that, we installed our heavy duty CleanSpace™ encapsulation liner, sealing it to the walls and floors.

Now, this homeowner's crawl space is insulated and encapsulated -- causing the home to have less drafts and cold floors. They are much more happy!

Insulating a Cape-style home in Unionville, CT

This homeowner in Unionville, CT reached out to us with a drafty, uncomfortable home. He believed that there was an issue with the attic. Our Home Comfort Specialist came out to the home and noted that the insulation in the attic was not adequate at all, and in some places the insulation was quite literally falling apart. This was particularly evident in the kneewalls in the main section of the house, which had very little insulation.

Luckily, Fogarty's Home Services had the perfect solution for this customer! We were able to help them by re-insulating their attic. In the kneewall space, we first started by bagging and removing the batt insulation on the wall. We then vacuumed out all loose insulation.

After that, we got to work insulating the kneewall. We installed blocks of SilverGlo™ foam insulation board between the ceiling joist bays. We then air sealed between these blocks. Since SilverGlo™ has a radiant barrier on both sides, it reflects roof heat out in the summer and house heat back in in the winter -- ensuring that the homeowner will be comfortable. They can already feel the difference in their home!

Installing an Insulated Storage Deck in Southington, CT

This homeowner in Southington, CT called us after discovering a mold issue in his home. When our Home Comfort Specialist came out to the home, he noticed that a large contributor to the mold was that there was inadequate insulation. Additionally, this homeowner had a storage deck that he used that was not insulated and hard to get insulation under.

We were able to help this customer. We removed the old deck in the attic and replaced it with our SuperPlatform™ insulated storage deck. The SuperPlatform™ is comprised of two materials -- our SilverGlo™ graphite-infused foam insulation board as well as OSB board over the top. Once the attic floor was clear and prepared, we got to work on building the SuperPlatform™. SilverGlo™ is laid down first, creating the base of the deck. Once that is secured in place, we installed OSB over the SilverGlo™, ensuring that it was secure as well. We then installed more OSB to create a dam -- this dam reached up approximately 18" above the attic floor. This meant that when we insulated the attic with other treatments, the insulation would not get on the deck. Now, the homeowner can continue to use the attic for storage, with all of the bonuses of proper insulation!

Duct Encapsulation in North Granby, CT

This home owner in North Granby, CT called us out to give him a full energy evaluation. While we were going through the home on our inspection, we noticed that he had his HV/AC system in his attic. Though it seems like a good spot to put these large systems, it might be the worst place possible. These systems are in an attic which can have a temperature from 140 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter! When you are trying to get hot air into your home to heat it from this system in the winter, it has to work extremely hard to fight the frigid temperatures to run. Then, the hot air it produces goes into a sheet metal duct that is like a freezer—making the hot air it just made cold by the time it gets into your living space! That is why the system can never stop running making it a very expensive problem. To fix this, we first put our 2 inch Silverglo EPS foam board with a reflective barrier on top of the duct. Then on the sides and the bottom, we sprayed the ducts with 2-part closed cell spray foam. This will help protect the system in the extreme climates it can face. Now that this system is protected, it will not run nearly as much—saving the home owner money and helping his family stay warm!
